“I consider students emerging writers who deserve clarity of
information, unwavering support from their teachers, and
enduring respect as they practise.”
—Lynn Quitman Troyka
The Third Canadian Edition of the Simon & Schuster
Handbook for Writers continues to provide students with an
unintimidating, yet solid grounding in research, writing, and
documentation, including fully updated and revised APA and MLA
citation guidelines. With her accessible writing style, Lynn
Troyka also addresses the increasing number of students who
are doing their writing on computer and their research online.
To this end, new features of this edition include the
following:
- a new chapter, 33, on “Successful Online Research,”
with information about searching the Web and the Internet,
narrowing a search, avoiding plagiarism, and evaluating
online sources
- a reorganized Chapter 32, “The Processes of Research
Writing,” that now features a section on the role of new
technologies in research
- coverage of the Columbia Online Style (COS) of
documentation
- additional Computer Tips, ESL Tips, and Alerts sprinkled
throughout the text, which help students incorporate
technology, assist those for whom English is a second
language, and highlight interactions between two or more
grammatical and rhetorical issues
- a new section in Chapter 1, “Knowing the tools that
can help you as a writer,” which discusses computers, a
personal bookshelf of reference volumes, and other
resources for writers
