The male pronouns traditionally used to refer to indefinite antecedents are no longer politically correct. Instead of using he, a communicator now finds it is usually more acceptable to include both genders.
Example: A taxpayer must submit his or her tax return by April 30.
Avoid the awkward use of his or hers, he or she, etc., by1: Using a plural antecedent.
Example: Taxpayers must submit their tax returns by April 30.
2: Using the you viewpoint.
Example: You must submit your tax return by April 30.
3: Rewriting the sentence to eliminate a pronoun.
Example: The tax return deadline is April 30.
