High school courses relevant to a career in GEOGRAPHY

Whether you are interested in the natural forces that shape the environmental conditions of Earth, or the human elements of culture, economy, and politics, there are geography courses that will help you master those all-important transferable skills.

Schools often have limitations on which elective courses students are able to select when planning for the following school year. These choices are often difficult for students to make as they weigh the pros and cons of each course, in each discipline, at each grade level. Fortunately for emerging geographers, this problem is somewhat lessened as the Grade 9 Geography course serves as the pre-requisite course for elective geography courses, allowing students to continue their geographic education in the higher grades.

The following list categorizes elective geography courses into physical (natural) geography and human (social) geography. The truth is each course overlaps a little into both categories, but the list below can serve as a guide as you plan your courses.
